August 16th was horrible but also very lucky. The gas tank in our animal transport van exploded while our founder was on his way to Union Square for an adoption drive. It is a miracle that all of the dogs are okay. However, the van is no longer usable. This means we will not be able to bring in dogs for our weekly adoption drives, and we won't be able to transport large food donations.
Now it is up to us to raise enough money to purchase a new van. We are working with a few car dealerships to see if anyone can give us a good deal, but the type of van we need is very specific. It has to be large enough to fit quite a few dog crates, tall enough for people to stand up inside, and ideally temperature-regulated as well. The old van was not air-conditioned in the back which really restricted our ability to transport in the summer.
