I adopted two cats from Ollie's Place, at separate times. My cat had recently died and I visited Ollie's Place at the suggestion of my wonderful vet. I wasn't looking to adopt, just give to a shelter or perhaps volunteer.

I fell in love with this little orange guy with perfect paws and a "show tail"; however, it wasn't his looks that snagged me. It was his coy and playful personality. I briefly volunteered and got to know him.  I was told he never left his cage, where the cats are allowed to run and play, a few times a day. This troubled me. Why so rough and tumble in the cage, but unable to venture out?

I adopted him and he remained under the couch for at least 3 months, although I could tell he was making progress every day.

Francis Clover, adopted Sept 2010
He would come to the edge to be brushed and he purred and meowed. He would eat treats out of my hand. Little by little, after secretly sizing me up, he blossomed into the most devoted cat. You know - the kind that sits on the computer keyboard while you're trying to type or the ones who relax on the warm laundry while you're trying to fold. He also decided that because I was so unbelievably awesome, he would sleep as close to me as possible. It was a long road but there is nothing more rewarding than a very shy cat "crossing over". His name is Francis Clover.

Dalai (adopted April 2012)
Francis became so attached to me that I became convinced he needed a friend. I knew his sister was still at Ollie's Place and ten times as shy but they are family, so we finally made the decision to adopt her. On her first night here she ran around and pounced on Francis! She sat in the window! She ate a treat out of my hand! She astonished us all! She is a precious part of this family. Her name is Dalai.

There is a reason for her nearly instant success though - Ollie's Place. The Ollie's Place volunteers respect the personality of every cat in their care. They nurture each and every one as if they are their own. Make no mistake, when you adopt a cat from Ollie's, you are not only receiving a healthy cat, you're also receiving a cat who has been truly loved.

Robert and Rosie
As an all-foster network, Mighty Mutts relies on a dedicated group of animal lovers to house and care for its adoptable dogs (and some cats). While speaking with those interested in becoming first-time fosters, we have found that many people have similar questions about it, such as, "What does it mean to foster?" "Why would you want to do it?" and the most frequent, "Isn't it hard to give them up?"

For the most part, foster parents can be broken up into two categories: those who foster once, fall in love, and adopt, and "serial fosters": those who foster again and again - taking in a dog or cat, loving them, helping them to become a well-adjusted pet, and then letting them go when the right person or family comes along. Serial fosters are a unique group. As difficult as it may be to give up a beloved foster dog to a new family, serial fosters rally on, with the sole goal of helping homeless animals and guiding them to their "forever" homes.

We sat down with Mighty Mutts serial foster Robert Herskovitz, foster dad to our very own Zach, to find out exactly why he does what he does. Robert has rescued dogs for many years, and his first Mighty Mutts foster dog was back in 2007.

A beloved family dog in Ghana didn't return home one night, and his owners feared that he was lost or had gotten injured. When they organized a search party and went looking for their pet, they were shocked to find he was not alone! The dog was curled around a newborn baby that had been abandoned in the woods to die.  Read the full story on The Stir.

Knowing how wonderful our dogs are it was no surprise then, when we also read about how pooches are pampered in Japan.  (Okay, I'll admit, maybe I raised an eyebrow or two...) Regular trips to luxury spas, the best in brand name accessories (Chanel, Dior, Hermès and Gucci!), and all the attention that an "only child" would get. Read the full story on The Guardian.

Between all the heroics and the royal treatment, when does a dog have time to kick back and relax?  These California pups show us how as they compete in the annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition in San Diego. Check out this video.  Surf's up!

Hi Everyone,

We need help!  We have a number of dogs in our foster program that require walkers that have to be paid, and while we manage most costs pretty well, the dog walking part is draining us.  Our cost is currently at almost $70 per weekday (add that up and we're talking $1,400 a month) and will increase shortly with the addition of another foster dog.

The benefits of the Foster program are:
  1. Dogs will remain in the city
  2. Dogs will be more readily available for showing, and meet & greets for potential homes
  3. Dogs will have socialization in a home environment.

We would hate to end the program and hope you can help.  PLEASE become a Walker-Sponsor and get your friends to join in.  Please make on-line donations or stop by Union Sq on Saturdays. And TELL OTHERS (Facebook, Twitter, email,...) whatever you can do to draw attention to this urgent situation!!  Thanks very much!

-Kit, Operations Manager

The summer holidays are around the corner!  Don't even dare to think that your pets aren't aware of your plan for a beach getaway (and not inviting them). They know. That's why they are secretly behind a number of pet-friendly travel options to keep them at your side. Read more about a few I found after the break.

Such tears of joy were shed during Solomon & Bruno's happy marriage and soon after, when they were whisked away to their forever home.  Their new family writes:

Dear Ollie’s Place,

Thank you so much for taking care of both Solomon and Bruno for these past years.  We are so happy to have them in our home and be a part of our family.  They love their new home and are getting accustomed to their new favorite nap spots.

We have attached a few pictures we have taken of them during the past few months.  Thank you again so much, and we wish Ollie’s Place future success in finding wonderful forever homes for the cats.

Sincerely,
The Seid Family
